Gizmodo - USB 3.0-Equipped PCs To Start Shipping By End of 2009 - usb 3.0
Rico Says “Maybe the fact that I’m excited about a new USB Spec shows off part of my geekiness, but the ability to transfer a 25 Gig file in 70 seconds is freakin sweet!  It takes me forever to backup and sync my (16GB) iPhone these days and I’m sick of waiting.  Of course, I’m sure this means that I’ll have to buy a new iPhone since I doubt Apple thought far enough ahead to plan for USB 3.0, but whatever, by the end of 2009 when USB 3.0 comes out, maybe that 32GB iPhone 3GS won’t cost a fortune for 3G owners…”

Meanwhile, it seems that two deaths weren’t enough for celeb hounds. A hoax was soon doing the rounds on the internet claiming that actor Jeff Goldblum had also died by falling off a cliff. Unfortunately, Australia’s Channel 9 news took it seriously and reported it. -

TG Daily (c) - Jacko death downs Twitter

Rico Says “This useless article about how Jackson’s death caused Twitter to go down (surprise!) and Google to get lots of Jacko Searches (double-surprise!) put this hilarious bit of information all the way at the bottom of the article.  I can’t believe Jeff Goldblum fell off a cliff - tough way to go buddy, at least a T Rex didn’t eat you.”

YouTube - Evolution of Dance

Rico Says “According to Wikipedia, this is the most viewed YouTube video of all time.  Is it blasphemy that I’ve never seen or heard of it before today?  Am I a bad netizen?  Don’t think so.  I simply never searched “Evolution of Dance” on youtube before … enjoy!!  (ohh, and several of the other Top 10 videos have the words Porn and XXX in them - what a surprise!)”

iPhone OS 3.0: The Little Things

Rico Reviews: So I upgraded to the latest and greatest iPhone OS for my iPhone 3G - OS 3.0 (try explaining that to your grandparents).  There are all sorts of new features that come with this *free* upgrade and several that only come with paying AT&T/Apple a bucket full of money for the iPhone 3GS — which Rico will not be paying for (although having 32GB of Music, instead of 16GB, would be REALLY nice, but not $400 nice).  The new features have been covered endlessly by sites like gizmodo, engadget, tuaw, cnet, etc… Anyway, check out those sites to learn about Cut/Copy/Paste, MMS (and how AT&T is screwing us until August/September), Spotlight, etc.  I’m here to talk about the little things:

1 - I really love that we can finally edit contacts anywhere we can see them in the OS 3.  The Favorites menu is so convenient and easy to access but for some reason we were unable to edit contacts from this menu.  YOu’d have to tap Contacts, then scroll to the Contact you wanted to edit.  Now - you can edit from Favorites, Recents, even Voicemail!  Finally!

2 - The length of all calls (broken out by call, classified by Incoming/Outgoing) made is now saved.  Nice.  All other phones do this, why not mine?  Exactly.

3 - Open in New Page in Safari is really nice.  If you tap & hold on a URL in a website, a menu pops up to open this link on a New Page.  How tab-like!

4 - When you send an SMS, the screen no longer goes dark as the bar loads.  Instead, the loading bar is at the top, and you can still scroll up and down in the SMS Conversation - or tap any other buttons within your phone.  Now I have to teach my brain to unlearn pressing the Home button immediately after sending text messages. Convenient.

5 - This one isn’t great, as I rarely find myself fast-forwarding MP3’s, but on the rare occasion that I do, it’s nice that I can be much more specific with my swiping due to half speed, quarter speed, and fine scrubbing capabilities.  Neat.

6 - I’m told that Safari will now remember my usernames and passwords.  I haven’t tested this across many sites, but it worked for my imdb.com login, which is nice.

7 - AT&T has made it so if you have an iPhone and log into a Starbucks Wifi once - you’ll never have to log in again.  How convenient!

Anyway, I think those are the majority of the little things.  Feel free to comment on other little things you’ve noticed while playing around with the new OS.

Later this summer, as part of the 3.0 software, AT&T will make multimedia messaging (MMS) available at no extra cost to customers with a text messaging bundle. -

AT&T: MMS ‘no Extra Cost’ for Text Bundle Customers - PC World

Rico Says “whew.  I wonder how else AT&T will figure out how to screw us…”
